I'm profiling a CMYK, lm, lc and Orange printer with an Onyx Rip, plus I also have i1 Profiler. Both the Rip and i1 Profiler support 5 color schemes. The Rip has profile making ability too. Do I set the Rip as CMYK+O and supply a CMYKO profile with i1 profiler? Do I set the as CMYK+O and supply a standard CMYK profile from i1 profiler? Do I set the Rip to CMYK+O and use the Onyx profile generation for a CMYK profile? Do I set the Rip for CMYK and install a CMYKO profile? I'd like to optimize the use of the Orange ink for gamut expansion of course. Any ideas on the best way to go? If I create the CMYKO profile using i1 Profiler, then I should measure a solid Orange ink patch on my media (canvas) and enter that into i1 Profiler. Should I enter the Lab values of an Orange patch that has the highest saturation I can print or highest density? Thanks, Randy Zaucha
Sounds like you might be profiling an Epson Surecolor? Tell us what printer you're profiling and let's go from there. Also tell us what media you're using as well as the media's ability to hold ink can dictate our usage of the Orange (some media will see a better gamut if you restrict the O and load up on the others inks while other media will benefit from O). The media plays a huge role in how successful the process and end results are. Scott Martin www.on-sight.com On Nov 4, 2013, at 3:41 AM, Randy Zaucha <zbet66@yahoo.com> wrote:

Just to add to what Scott has already said, you might try looking into the "Accusure" screening option in Onyx....Accusure is basically an RGB contone driver that uses the printer vendor's screening, ink limiting (via media type) and ink "separation" mode. If it is indeed an Epson SureColor, you might be better served taking advantage of what Epson has already determined is the best use of the extra inks for a particular media. In my experience, you will rarely do much better than what Epson has already come up with unless you have tons of experience with these printers. In my opinion, stay away from the Aurora AC canvas. I'm supporting 4 Epson S50670 printers using that canvas and we've had a lot of quality control issues with that media, mainly debris and surface coating issues, that have caused a lot of grief. I'd look at Epson GS Canvas Satin or similar. Terry On Nov 4, 2013, at 1:42 PM, Randy Zaucha <zbet66@yahoo.com> wrote:

One more thing fellas... How do I get an i1 Profiler generated 5 color target to open and print in Onyx? Even though the Onyx is configured as CMYKO friendly, the i1 Profiler targets preview (and print) as black and white only. Randy, Open the file in Job Editor. The select the Preview and Size tab. Then in the 'PS/PDF Setup' pane, select 'Properties.' In the window that pops up when you do that, select the 'PS/PDF Separations' tab. Check the box that says 'Separation File', and then select CMYKO from the dropdown list. Then print You can also make a Quickset to do all this, so you only have to set it up once. Mike Adams Correct Color On Nov 4, 2013, at 3:48 PM, Randy Zaucha wrote:

You could always give Onyx tech support a call and see if they can help. Did you open the target in Photoshop to see if it's OK? What format are you saving from i1Profiler? I can remember needing to open some multi-channel charts in Photoshop and fixing them there before they would print.......something about inverted channels and such.....been a while. Ahh, love those Surecolors - and good to hear you're on the S70. ONYX offers the "AccuPhoto GSX" "Contone" mode that utilizes preset calibration parameters that leads to an easy, 1 step profiling process. This will be "good enough" for many, but since these preset parameters aren't optimal for most media, advanced users will want to go through the more advanced procedure using the "Stochastic" mode, determining optimal ink limits, linearization curves, and total ink limiting for each media prior to profiling. I was at Epson's office earlier this year and they were telling me about how they optimized the AccuPhoto GSX for their canvas. They were blown away that I could beat the AccuPhoto GSX mode with a custom setup in Stochastic mode. Profile as CMYK in AccuPhoto GSX, and profile in CMYKO in Stochastic mode. i1Profiler is great in this mode especially with a few tweaks. In order for ONYX to recognize i1Profiler's DCS targets, you’ll need to edit the ONYX Quick Set, click “Advanced”, go the PS/Postscript tab, enable separations and add the appropriate channels. Use “All ICC Profiles OFF” when printing the target in ONYX. Of course, the Achilles heal of ONYX is knowing how to find the sweet spots for Ink Restrictions and Ink Limiting prior to profiling. That's a topic for another day! Scott Martin www.on-sight.com On Nov 4, 2013, at 12:42 PM, Randy Zaucha <zbet66@yahoo.com> wrote:

Randy, In quick answer to your questions:
Do I set the Rip as CMYK+O and supply a CMYKO profile with i1 profiler?
That's the best way to do it, yes. But to do that, you must open the Media Library, select the media and mode where you want to add the profile, right click, then select 'Import ICC', then import the profile, then set it as the default.
Do I set the as CMYK+O and supply a standard CMYK profile from i1 profiler?
No. That won't work.
Do I set the Rip to CMYK+O and use the Onyx profile generation for a CMYK profile?
You can, but the Onyx ICC profile-making engine is not as good as the i1 Profiler engine.
Do I set the Rip for CMYK and install a CMYKO profile?
No. That won't work either.
I'd like to optimize the use of the Orange ink for gamut expansion of course. Any ideas on the best way to go?
Onyx is a great RIP for this purpose, but it's a steep learning curve to get all it's got to give out of it. Far more than you'll find answers for on a forum.
If I create the CMYKO profile using i1 Profiler, then I should measure a solid Orange ink patch on my media (canvas) and enter that into i1 Profiler. Should I enter the Lab values of an Orange patch that has the highest saturation I can print or highest density?
That's honestly not all that critical. In fact, you can enter any number you want; it really doesn't matter. The profile-making engine will determine the actual value of the orange primary from the printed patches. But typically, just to be precise, I measure whatever the max orange is on a given media in the linearization patches, and use that. Good luck. Mike Adams Correct Color
