Anyone have any experience using the Epson ColorBase utility? The fun part of this mission is that we will be attempting to improve an Epson 9880 color range for dye sublimation. Currently the image on the sublimation paper is too dark and the RGB driver selections are limited. We are using a Studioprint Rip but there are no calibration offerings in the Rip a we are using an RGB driver. My hope is that the utility will enable us to get a full range of gamut and tone. I'm unfamiliar with the utility, but the standard solution to your problems is to build and use an ICC color profile for the combination of printer, paper, ink, and possibly viewing conditions in question. Cheers, b& On Jan 25, 2014, at 6:30 PM, Randy Zaucha <zbet66@yahoo.com> wrote:

Hi Randy, I have used the utility on a smaller Epson printer. As far as I understand it the function of the utility is: simply to make the printer conform to what Epson believes is the standard colour performance for that model. It works specifically with Epson papers, but, having gone to the trouble of printing, measuring and running the software you only end up with the ability to use Epson’s “canned” paper profiles. Put simply: the utility “zeroes the printer”. In order to use the utility a spectrophotometer reading set is needed, so the major capital expense for full profiling must be already incurred. I would always (even if I used Colorbase) create my own custom profiles, because these correct the whole package of printer, ink and paper - and do not limit me to using Epson’s paper and their “canned” profiles.
