We are considering upgrading to the Epson 4900 printers with the SpectraProofer option. Does anyone have experience with this? One question I have which I cannot seem to find an answer to in the literature is what is needed to drive the SpectraProofer. Is there Epson software that comes with it? Will third party software drive it? Does it build ICC profiles automatically and if so, what does that mean for building ICC profiles externally? One main intended use would be to keep multiple printers in calibration with each other. Does the SpectraProofer make this any more simple than if I already have an EyeOne iSis? Thanks for any input you can provide.

We use a 9900 with the SpectraProofer

The SpectraProofer has its own software. It does NOT build profiles. All it does is send one of two pre-set targets to the printer, measure the results and then send the measurements back to your computer. You can use third party software with it. The latest GMG RIPs will use it to linearise and calibrate the printers and also measure FOGRA control strips.

Doubt it'll be much help with that. The main benefits we've found are that you can auto calibrate the proofing system when the studio is unmanned, save a lot of time by not having to verify FOGRA proofs by hand* and the ability to measure media up to 1.5mm thick (our DTP70s choked on anything over 300gsm). *Although this can also waste a production if you need to proof lots of pages at a time because the printer has to pause for 5 minutes between each proof. In which case it's quicker to go back to measuring by hand so that the printer can run without interruption. -- Martin Orpen Idea Digital Imaging Ltd
Just to "ditto" much of what Martin mentioned.... I've no clue what Epson offers out-of-the-box for driving the SpectroProofer.....my experience is with GMG ColorProof. With GMG, it's *primarily* used for auto-recalibration (unattended if you wish on a schedule that you can set). It can also be used for creating GMG MX4 profiles if you wish but the target choices are somewhat limited, particularly for the "gamut" files that GMG uses for calibration and profile calculation. I think a lot of us GMG installers use the built-in spectro for calibration but largely make our MX4 and ICC profiles "off-line" using an iSis or some other spectro. Reason for this would be for speed, convenience and a wider choice of targets. The Spectroproofer, along with GMG ProofControl, can also be used for in-line proof verification. Once the proof is finished printing, the Spectroproofer can measure the media wedge/control bar, send the data to ProofControl which will then pass/fail the proof and optionally print the label right on the proof. As for making ICC printer profiles, theoretically you could do this with GMG by capturing the measurement data from the SpectroProofer and then converting/exporting the data to CGATS format and then importing this to the profile application of your choice. Not done often with GMG since their MX4 profiles tend to do a superior job over ICC profiles but it's possible. It's a fairly simple utility that allows you to: 1. Linearize the printer 2. Print & Measure a chart You only have a choice of two charts: TC9.18 & TC2.13 Couldn't find the user guide on Epson's site, so have uploaded it here: <http://www.rgb2cmyk.co.uk/i/en.pdf> Forgot to mention that the main benefit of this utility is that it allows you to profile your printer even though Apple and Adobe have done their best to make running a non-colour managed test chart as difficult as possible :) I've built some profiles for Hahnemühle Photo Rag, German Etching & Baryta using data from the SpectroProofer and I'm really happy with the results. -- Martin Orpen Idea Digital Imaging Ltd
I haven't used Spectroproofer utilities as of yet but the installer includes reference files for the following charts. ECI2002 CMYK Random ECI2002 CMYK Visual IT8.7-3 TC2.83 TC9.18 I'm assuming you can print these charts using spectroproofer utilities, read the charts with spectroproofer device, export the data and create a profile using profile creation software of your choice. -- Steve Miller Color Management Specialist "Quality Begins Here" BIC Advertising & Promotional Products 1000 3rd Ave. SW Sleepy Eye, MN 56085 Tel.: (1) 507 794 8203 E-mail: slmiller@norwood.com www.norwood.com / www.bicgraphic.com CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE This electronic message is confidential and may contain legally privileged information intended only for the use of the individual or company named above. Charts were printed via the Epson driver (no RIP)?

Yep -- although I suspect that the SpectroProofer Utility bypasses the Epson driver on the Mac and sends the chart directly to the printer. I love my RIPs but I also like to *go commando* when printing RGB images on some types of art paper :) -- Martin Orpen Idea Digital Imaging Ltd
