I have multiple workstations that all need to print to multiple servers. Currently we just manually distribute new profiles anytime we need to update them, but this is cumbersome and error prone (if someone overlooks installing the new profile, for example). I am writing today to ask if anyone knows of a way to include ICC profiles in the system that are located on a server rather than on the local disk. I know there are many places profiles can be located, but I don't know of any way to place them centrally on a server so that they are automatically available on the local computers. This way I could update a printer profile in one place and everyone would make use of it. I doubt this is possible, but it's worth asking anyhow! Thanks in advance. Ken Fleisher
Have you tried putting an alias to your network ICC folder in your local profile folder? I cannot test this right now, but I know that aliases do work between the various local ICC folders so I'm thinking as long as your users have the appropriate network volume mounted it could do the trick. This would be a Mac-centric solution BTW; I have no way to test if a Windows shortcut would work the same way (I guess it depends on whether Windows would "follow" a shortcut to its source when scanning the profile folder). We have all Macs and for some reason an alias did not occur to me. I tried it and it does in fact work. If I don't change the name of the network profile, but I make a new one with the same name, the alias appears to continue to link correctly. So finally I have a way to update just one profile and everyone will have it automatically. I wish I thought of this years ago! Thanks for the suggestion. A bit more rock solid but with a similar functionality, try Symbolic Links. They work great for DropBox where you can avoid that product's force upon a single drop box folder. For example: http://seiryu.home.comcast.net/~seiryu/symboliclinker.html Andrew Rodney http://www.digitaldog.net/
Sounds like Brian has probably the best/simplist solution but this should also be easy to do with a network shared Library from a Mac server. I've done it in the past probably on Tiger or Leopard, but don't remember the particulars off hand. On Mon, Apr 8, 2013 at 10:05 AM, Ken Fleisher <PT_Ken@netbox.com> wrote:

Windows? I'm 99% sure that the default (on Windows 7-64) anyway is the .\drivers\color subdirectory. My speculation is that it can be extended, if you know what you are doing. IIRC, I noticed with Datacolor SpyderPrint that you could define a "Hot Directory" that I think allowed there to be multiple directories. That might be like the PATH environment variable, which defines a priority list to resolve executables. ".\drivers\color" ... might ... be similar for resolving .icc / .icm in a certain order. Or not? I believe there is the capability of having the .icc resolved differently for different users on the same Windows desktop, which I infer to mean that it isn't just the system-wide .\drivers\color Perhaps ... CAREFULLY! search your Registry (with RegEdit.exe) for the string "drivers\color" and see what shows up. The environment variables are actually in the Registry, and it might work similarly. Or you might be able to use the Control-Panel for Color-Management + Advanced to add to the list where it searches to resolve .icc references. HTH for at least a hint or two for proceeding. Someone else may know for sure, and we'll both learn! -----Original Message----- From: Ken Fleisher Sent: Monday, April 08, 2013 8:05 AM To: ColorSync Users Mailing List Subject: ICC Profiles located on Server I have multiple workstations that all need to print to multiple servers. Best way to handle this is to use Apple Remote Desktop and push the profiles to each workstation. Hands down the easiest, fastest, most reliable way to do a network "blast" like this. ARD is worth the money for so many management functions. It's a real time saver. If you have more than 3 Mac's it's a must have.
