How it is done: via Runtime.getRuntime.exec () of (spawn) 1. /sbin/mount_smbfs -d0777 -f0777 //trapcd039/JobContainer /Users/digi/.esko_automounts/smb_TRAPCD039 2. "open local_filespec" (some directory beneath the mountpoint)(The mountpoint has rwx access for all.) Result: after fillling in a user and password in the dialog that pops up, the Finder pops up a window in which the specified directory is displayed. (The local Mac OS X user is a standard user (not Admin). The supplied credentials for mounting indicate a windows user that has sufficient permissions on the windows share.) Conclusion So far so good. The volume gets mounted and the Finder window displays the contents of the directory. Problem When I drag a file with the Finder into the above mentioned window/directory to copy it onto the Windows share, this always fails: a window pops up saying: "The item ... cannot be copied because there is not enough free space." Also, The Finder window shows on bottom line in that window: "91 items, Zero KB available" However, if I do in a shell window (Terminal): "cp xyz.pdf /mountpoint/and_below", this operation succeeds !! So, apparently, the smb volume is nicely mounted for read AND write, but the Finder has another opinion on this. ( Strange also is: if I mount the same volume (with same credentials) with the Finder (Go-Connect to Server-Address smb://trapcd039/JobContainer), then I can copy onto the share using the Finder. ) Can somebody explain, or better, does anyone has a tip how to solve this ?? Just to clarify something that apparently is a tad confused here. OS X is not a special case: The situation is that you can't take a Unix BINARY release built on a flavor of Unix on a different platform and run it under X11 on another flavor of Unix in another platform. You can't do that, Darwin or not Darwin or OS X. It is COMMON procedure to ANY Unix flavor to get the source distribution and do a ./configure && make && make install to get the binary for your Unix flavor built on your platform, then you may install/distribute the binary on another same environment without having to recompile/link. Till you do that "you can't just take a Unix release and run it under X11 on <whatever>" because more often than ever they will not be binary compatible. OS X is no different: On Fink and others you find binaries and source as well. It is very common that you have to port source code to a different platform, either by making your code portable or by decorating it with platform specific #ifdef's . But that is also language specific. Take the example of Python: most of the times you do nothing, it just runs on OS X, and the code is the same whether you are going to run it on Linux PC or OS X. For the applications mentioned by the original poster, they are supported under OS X. Finally, as others have suggested, have a look at Fink. This email sent to site_archiver(a)lists.apple.com

If I'm not mistaken, -rpath in GNU ld stores a set of directories that are consulted at runtime for dependent shared libraries. The closest thing is the -install_name flag as documented in ld(1), which embeds a shared library's installed path. Programs that link against the library at static link time store this path, to be used by the dynamic linker at runtime. What is, in the apple version of ld, the replacement for the "rpath" option giving a set of directories to search for a shared library (or a bundle)? Matlab and Mathematica have specific MacOSX releases. Naturally they're not free, but I think if you're already licenced to use the product it doesn't cost extra to get the MacOSX version. As others have explained, you can't just take a Unix release and run it under X11 on Darwin - it has to be compiled for the specific processor architecture. The MacOSX version of Matlab is actually a fairly straight port of the Unix version - the front end is Cocoa from what I can tell, but X11 is used for the graphics engine. The answer to the second question is that you use xemacs the same way you used it on other X systems. :-) Seriously, it depend which emacs you want. There is http://emacs-on-aqua.sourceforge.net which appears to be based on xemacs and allows mutiple aqua windows, etc. If you want emacs under X11, you need to install X11 first and install the xemacs package. The instructions are on apple.com. Then there is the command line version for use in a terminal window. It comes with the developer tools, I think. The short answer is that there are many applications available, all of which must be compiled specifically for the Macintosh architecture. If you are interested in a commercial application you should contact your vendor and ask for a Mac OS X version. (I switched my Mathematica license from Unix to Mac OSX.) Many open-source applications common to Unix are available for Mac OSX. Generally you need to compile these from a source distribution in order to install them, although people make binary releases available from time to time. Most people use a package manager to build, install, and maintain open-source applications. Fink, DarwinPorts, and Gentoo are package managers that maintain collections of open-source applications known to compile and work on Mac OS X. The mainline distribution of GNU Emacs supports a native Mac OS X target; it will build an Emacs.app that works just like other Mac applications. Xemacs is also available, but you may have to run X11 in order to use it. I would recommend you look at http://fink.sourceforge.net or try a web search engine.
