These commands have no equivalent in Darwin 6.x, they were introduced in Darwin 7.x. Event though StartupItemContext compiles on Darwin 6.x, it may require support from mach_init which isn't present in that version (this is just speculation). The How-To in the Darwin documentation (and the man page of SystemStarter in 10.2.8) is not really clear on the context. Would it be a StartupItem context (bootstrap) or another one? The program does correctly use "en_US", not "en-US" as I typed here. If I build the test program with 'gcc localetest.c -o localetest' everything works as expected. If I build the test program with 'gcc -framework Carbon localetest.c -o localetest' (with NO other changes), the setlocale() call seems to have no effect. This means that several of the fields I'm interested in (negative_sign, mon_thousands_sep, and mon_grouping, to be specific) end up as empty strings. It seems nonsensical that linking with the Carbon framework would change the behavior of posix API's like this, but I just saw it happen. I realize that there are alternate internationalization API's available in Carbon, but for my purposes, posix locale support should be more than sufficient, and there's no reason it shouldn't work. StartupItemContext is only available with Darwin 7.x and later but it can be compiled on Darwin 6.x. The "only" problem is that it does not look to work correctly from what I'm seeing. Just to be clear here: from the OS perspective there is no notion of fsync being "on" or "off" -- it always behaves the same way as documented in the man page. An system like SQlite may allow you to enable or disable calling fsync but that's a different thing altogether.
