The situation is the classic one: I want my program to listen on the modem port but yield it to any other program wishing to use it. The efax man page mentions the "UUCP device locking protocol", but this appears to be useful only if all other applications adhere to it. Is Open Transport's arbitration mechanism supported under Mac OS X? If so, what does it use on the darwin level? I also wouldn't want the fact that I'm listening on the device to interfere with sleep. Do I need to listen for system power notifications and close the port when the system is requesting permission to go to sleep? Right now I have to edit the Makefile created by ./configure because it contains -mcpu=Power Macintosh and -march=Power Macintosh. The spaces between the Power and Macintosh gcc can't understand. I can't find where ./configure is getting that, so that I can change it. The issue is not that NVRAM requires a reboot to be changed. It doesn't. The NVRAM has indeed been updated once you've run the nvram command. The issue is that the kernel only reads the changed variables out of NVRAM at boot time. Is the NVRAM memory mapped into the kernel such that the bsd kvm_read/kvm_write calls can be used to update the NVRAM? A valid point. But if you've panicked, you have to reboot anyway. You can save one reboot by updating NVRAM using the Open Firmware UI, but that requires you to be physically present at the server.
