I did some research on the Internet before posting, and I ran across a web page which indicated that even on 10.4, unloading dynamic libraries is still not supported. I wanted to review that web page again, and I have been unable to find it. I haven't bothered trying to debug the hanging program yet, as I haven't had the time to look into problem. Switching all the libraries from dynamic style to bundle style is time consuming as there are a lot of libraries and it take a long time to rebuild on my system. It is these two symlinks that make configure scripts falsely detect GNU readline when it is not present. This is the bug. If you want to port software to Darwin, arrange to not call the unimplemented functions. If you want to use GNU Linux then use GNU Linux. Have a look at *BSD distributions. The next minor OSX software update may very well destroy these files without telling you. Although, in the case at hand, it is very tempting to trash that annoying symlink /usr/lib/libreadline.dylib->libedit.dylib that has no useful function whatsoever. Well, of course you are right about the danger of replacing things in /usr/lib and /usr/include...
