I tried using AuthorizationExecuteWithPrivileges with the system.privilege.admin right and just executing the /usr/bin/ defaults binary, but for some reason I wasn't accessing the same defaults that I would see if I ran defaults as root. What is the best way to do this? What is the right that I need to request in order to access root's defaults database? To be honest, authorization in OS X has always been confusing to me, and until now I've used authorization by only doing what's very similar to the examples that can be found in documentation. Generally it is recommended that {SHA1} or {SSHA1} is used. The manifestation of this is that you can't log in to the GUI whilst authenticating against an LDAP server whose user accounts have passwords stored in SHA-1 hashes, but you can log in using ssh (and possibly other stuff). The gcc 4.0 in Tiger seems changes its behavior of libstdc++, from static linking to dynamic. For example, we have a module which uses C++ STL to read some tuples from files into multimap. This module has different binary size with different g++ compilers: Panther gcc 3.3: 812756 bytes Tiger gcc 3.3: 817752 bytes Tiger gcc 4.0: 74976 bytes Since Tiger defaults to use gcc 4.0, we were happy about shrinked size, but we became worrying about slow initializing soon... The module compiled with Tiger gcc 4.0 needs 30 ticks (1 tick = 1/60 second) on initialization! We realize this is a trade-off between dynamic library and static one. Currently we can just compile our codes with gcc 3.3, but we are wondering if Apple could provide static link version libstdc++ or not? And hope our experience is useful to others. Thank you. Another would be to redirect lookups across to the real filesystem. A third (more like WebDAVfs) would be to have the fsnode hold a reference to the 'real' vnode. I'm afraid I don't know enough about filesystems yet to know what the differences between inodes, vnodes and fsnodes are (I've only ever really been an applications programmer up until now) -- and Googling for all three at once didn't turn up any explanation. I will go and dig some more, and also look at the WevDAVfs code. I think what I have described above is more like your second option though? Is that what volfs is doing, do you know? The drawback with the WebDAVfs approach in your case is that modifications to a file might have the effect of moving it out of the 'directory' (because it no longer matches the query), and so the 'path' to the file might change in ways that an application would not be happy about. A problem with the symlink approach would be that it would not be possible to have those files be the 'real' files, so you couldn't e.g. delete them, or move them en masse. This isn't so much a problem because you can get this sort of behaviour with the Finder search box already. I think that none of the folders would be writable, but you could modify the files themselves (seemingly "in place") if you had appropriate permissions, as is the case with volfs. (as enumerating all the possible entries would make no sense). Also, like volfs it should report identical inode numbers for the files it references (i.e., they should be akin to hard links). However, as you say I would want it to behave like WebDAVfs in caching its results (using kernel notification or "live updates" in Spotlight terminology). Having thought about this some more I realise, given that MDQuery apparently requires a run loop to yield results (although the documentation says it can run synchronously), I would probably need a daemon process to take queries from feed results to my filesystem (via Mach messages?). It strikes me that the process "mds" is already that daemon (feeding results to the MDQuery), and it would be a shame to duplicate the functionality, but I don't suppose you know how MDQuery and the mds daemon actually communicate? You're *so* close to WebDAV in some regards here it's just not funny; you really need to go look at it, I believe it's open-sourced. One thing that you want to consider here is whether you want queries to map to files or directories.
