What exectly is supposed to change when setting _APPLE_C_SOURCE? I realize that this causes a new version of pthread_cancel to be called. However, the real problem is that the POSIX mandated thread cancellation points are missing, e.g. in read and write. Is there any way, in Darwin, to interrupt a thread that is blocking in a system call like read? pthread_cancel does not seem to work, even if the code is compiled with -D_APPLE_C_SOURCE. PS. This is the way ARP support is implemented: the last-sent packet to a specific address is kept; previous ones are dropped. I would have assumed that either the messages would be sent or that they would get a timeout fail, not that they would be reported as successful and not sent. Can anyone shed some light on my situation? Yup. UDP datagram service does not guarantee delivery. The udp code takes the packet from the sender, readies it for output, and sends it on its way. No buffering takes place. If you send too quickly, you get the behavior you are seeing. This is part of the protocol definition, rather than an implementation issue. CFSocketError CFSocketSendData ( CFSocketRef s, CFDataRef address, CFDataRef data, CFTimeInterval timeout ); The socket was created using SOCK_DGRAM. I set the timeout to 0 and then trap the result code. As a matter of fact, I tried the pathconf solution as suggested by Don Brady and it worked fine as I was mainly interested in the max file name length in that case. We have an application with a module which uses JNI. If we build the module on Intel it works on both PowerPC and Intel. If we build on PowerPC it crashes on Intel.
