Here's a test case. If you set a break point on DiskArbCallback_ChangeNotification(), and then insert a disk (I tried an AudioCD and a USB FAT flash drive), the breakpoint is not hit when the volume mounts, but when you eject it, gdb stops. That's what I just did. It looks like this is ultimately what I'll need to do. It appears that the status quo is much better than Dave's prognosis on 10.4. On 10.3 however, his memory may be correct. Actually, now that you mention it... I'd hope that if you try and open () the file with O_EVTONLY, you could find out programmatically that way. That would certainly be worth testing. And even some that do, like some remote filesystems, may only support a subset of the notification semantics described here. Which filesystems are supported? If memory serves me correct, just HFS in Tiger. But we're trying (no promises) to move that logic up to the VFS layer so that all file systems get it for free. How can I determine at runtime whether a file system is supported? (And if the notification semantics are what I need?) I don't believe we have any programmatic way to answer that question right now. manual network configuration problem

I can get the ethernet interface configured, but the resolver isn't working. Although the 'host' command works, no other apps can get IP numbers, and they all give dns lookup errors. Things work fine in DHCP mode, but I need it to work in MANUAL mode as well. Any clues for the helpless? Netstat and ifconfig utilities give proper indications that the interface is up and configured correctly. I can ssh to and from the machine. The /etc/hosts file is read by ssh, but it cannot find outside internet addresses. I have a correct resolv.conf file, which works fine on my Darwin-7.2.1 machine, but not on the 8.0.3 machine. I also tested the 8.0.1 kernel to no avail. I can ping and connect by IP address, but not by name. I was thinking that this DNS issue could be related to the lookup order for lookupd. Could someone please suggest a lookup order where NetInfo and DNS both work, which can be set manually. I know how to set this with nicl I think, if you will just give me then lookupd names in proper order. Thank you. HFS+ does not support sparse files; what you are seeing is the expected and correct behaviour.
