The documentation I have found (in the Unix network programming 'bible') suggests that the technique should go something like: However, in my tests, the alarm does not happen, and when the other end of the socket fails to deliver and data to the read, the read never times out. Same goes for the same type of thing on an connect(). I also tried using the setitimer instead of alarm, but same results. This is typically calling from the main thread of an app, incidentally. The app makes infrequent, brief requests for data from a server- connect, write, then wait for the reply (which is this read). In the case that the server accepts the connection and the write, but for some reason does not reply with any data, the read sits waiting indefinitely. I am sure I must be missing something really basic, so perhaps someone could advise. I could use a polled non blocking read, but its part of a much larger intensive IP infrastructure with many clients, and I would like to be as efficient as possible. After reading this, I realize I've now seen conflicting info on which compiler version I need to build for 10.3(.9) - I have seen both of: - targeting OS X 10.3.9 can be done with gcc 4.0 - targeting prior to OS X 10.4 requires gcc 3.3 I am building .dylibs and executables. Can I get a definitive answer from you Apple guys about what is supported? (Reminder: I am using Xcode 2.3.) 10.3.9 has changes that allows code compiled with gcc 4.0 to function. So you can target 10.3.9 and later using gcc 4.0. If you need to support something earlier then 10.3.9 then you need to use gcc 3.3. I believe this issue is related to C++/Objective-C++ code. However this factoid applies to user mode development and may not apply to kernel development. I am trying to create a UB which will run on 10.3 PPC, and 10.4 everywhere, but I am running into some snags. My situation: Build machine: i386 iMac, OS X 10.4.8, running Xcode 2.3 (gcc 4.0.1 build 5341). I am using makefiles, building each architecture independently, and then combining libs and executables using lipo. Everything was complete and working, building only for 10.4. Then I got the requirement that the PPC binary needed to work with 10.3.9. I added "-isysroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.3.9.sdk" to my makefiles for object code creation. Everything built fine, but when running the UB on PPC 10.3.9, I get the runtime error: So, I went back to add "-syslibroot /Developer/SDKs/ MacOSX10.3.9.sdk" to the link (ld) lines, but now on one of my .dylibs I am building, I am getting an error of ___cxa_atexit being undefined. What am I missing here?
