I saw that, and read it before, including the following: "Documentation for the VFS KPI is still rather rudimentary. Apple will rectify this in the future (r. 3524590); in the meantime, this Q&A includes a list of references to documentation and other resources." I have the 4.4 BSD book, and am reading through it, I googled for VFS KPI, and got lots of hits for other systems, as well as for the book MAC OS X Internals By Amit Singh, but I haven't seen much about the KPI. What I'm really after is complete documentation on how the KPI works, so I can decide if it is the right path to go down. I want to write an interface to my version control system (in this case, Subversion, but it could be anything) that lets me 'mount' different working copies (and different revisions of the same one), in the same way that you can mount a disk image. The idea is that the meta information (.svn, .cvs, whatever) can be fully hidden from the mounted drive. Each modification can be an unnamed revision, with some kind of special tool handling naming particular modifications (or, if I can, I can make it like how CDs/DVDs have a burn button in their toolbar, I haven't fully thought out the interface yet). Tools that don't understand what version control is wouldn't break the system, and using it would be more natural. There is a well defined Obj-C and C API. If you wish to use Apple's VFS KPI, your best bet is following the links in that Q&A to the sample code implementations: http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/EmptyFS/index.html is a very simple VFS plug-in; its volumes are completely empty (except for the root directory). The purpose of this sample is to create the minimal VFS plug-in that builds and runs. You can use EmptyFS to explore VFS behaviour, or as a template for your own VFS plug-in. http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/MFSLives/index.html is a sample VFS plug-in that implements read-only access to the Macintosh File System (MFS) volume format. MFS is an excellent volume format for sample code because it's very simple but it allows you to exercise the code paths associated with Macintosh-specific metadata (specifically, Finder info, multi-fork files, and volfs). You can also look at http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/ and the webdavfs source. These are all linked to from that Q&A, so I don't really understand what you're asking for beyond the resources that have been presented to you. These are all examples of implementing a VFS plug-in which is compatible with the latest release of Mac OS X. However, doing so is tricky and not for the faint of heart. And before anyone points out to me that Apple discourages stacking file systems, I know that; however, Apple is doing SOMETHING in order to mount disk images, and my uneducated guess is something to do with KPI (the only other thing I can think of is IOMedia Filter, but that doesn't quite seem right). So, my original statement that fsync (...) produces EBADF (9) may be not correct. ( Unless the fault is reported to the wrong thread - TH1, rather then TH2)... 3. Tracing assembly code showed the following: after the EBADF(9) appeared within TH1, the following calls of sem_wait(&sem) are translated into some syscall, which returning 9 in %rax register, and then cerror call... The self->detached check above is true in the case of the main thread, so the main thread always uses the global errno value, and the global errno value is always set at the same time the per-thread value is set. While the window for this race *should* be small (programs are supposed to only check errno immediately after a failed library call), I've filed a bug against the "optimization" in the __error() implementation... matt.

This is why it's usually implemented as a macro, so that under the hood it's really a call to some OS specific function get the thread's local errno, e.g.: You're asking "how to distinguish errno (global) from errno ( thread local) on OS X 10.5 Leopard?", but I don't think that question even makes any sense; there's no such thing as a global errno, as far as I can tell. 1. First thread - TH1 - is waiting to be waked up within the function sem_wait(...) 2. Second thread - TH2 - is executing some code. Within such code, there is a call for fsync(...) function. The behavior is that if fsync() function within TH2 is failing, then TH1 is returning form sem_wait(...) with errno EBADF ( int 9). The only explanation I see is that for some reason global errno is checked within TH1 instead of thread local. The code , in C++, is compiled with `-pthread` flag, under OS X 10.5... My question is how to distinguish errno (global) from errno ( thread local) on OS X 10.5 Leopard? I was wondering if you had any opinion one way or the other... two launchd entries with the java one dependent on the wrapper or having the wrapper fork/exec the java process and then manage it actively. launchd does not allow you to express dependencies except through IPC. Using two plists is not the approach you want to take. The wrapper doesn't have to actually fork(2). All you need to do is get the process far along enough to get the file descriptor, then it's done. So just use the launch(3) APIs to grab the file descriptor, stash it somewhere in your process (like in an environment variable) and exec (2). Then have your Java app check that environment variable for the descriptor index and do its thing.
