I was not referring to the ipfw bug, not to the xnu building, sorry if it did seem otherwise! For the ipfw problem(s) [one is the fwd bug and the other a panic caused by some not yet well identified rule, both reported to Apple] I am working on it, but I am also sure that others with more experience on the bsd layer of Darwin would stand a better chance! In this case it sounds like he needs to know when a certain amount of real time has passed, independent of the setting of the system clock. In this case I would register to receive system sleep events and use gettimeofday() to track the amount of time the system has been asleep, but use mach_absolute_time() for monotonic time while the machine is awake. Files there are deleted if they are not accessed after a few days. _CS_DARWIN_USER_CACHE_DIR is a cache directory. Files there survive longer than those in USER_TEMP_DIR, but may be deleted during OS upgrades or safe boot, for example. NSDownloadsDirectory is ~/Downloads (probably), which is the same download location that Safari uses by default. Files there are not automatically deleted. The confstr() directories are on the local disk (probably), while NSDownloadsDirectory and ~/Library/Caches may be on a slower network home directory. All of these are per-user directories, while /tmp and /Library/Caches are shared among all users which can cause security problems if you're not careful.
