While using this I can obtain a valid file descriptor for reading any disk, I can not get a valid file descriptor for writing to disk (/dev/ rdisk1, which is a pen drive). However it doesn't. Eg You're right that invoking the command 'sudo syslog -c 0 -d' sets syslog's "master" filter to let everything through, including debug messages. However by default the master filter is off, which according to man syslog(1) means "it has no effect", ie everything gets through anyways. And as I mentioned, I checked to make sure the master filter hadn't been turned on, witness So setting the filter mask up to debug doesn't help in my case. In fact, I can't think of any use case for I'll file a bug against the misleading line in man syslog(1) and suggest a different example which sets the master filter to cutoff messages above a certain level, which I gather from man syslog(1) is the master filter's intended purpose. but didn't find anything. That's the filter that you are correctly changing with asl_set_filter. Normally, the filter screens out Info and Debug level messages, If you set it to ASL_FILTER_MASK_UPTO(ASL_LEVEL_DEBUG) or LOG_UPTO(LOG_DEBUG) when using the syslog(3) API, then your process doesn't screen out anything. When a message is received and processed by syslogd, more sorting and filtering takes place. For messages that are saved in the ASL database, there's a filter that's very similar to the client-side filter. By default, it screens out Info and Debug level messages. Messages that get saved to the "Legacy" BSD log files, like /var/log/ system.log, have their own filtering rules that are found in /etc/ syslog.conf. The "syslog" command line utility does a database seacrh, so if you want to use it to retrieve Debug level messages, you'll need to adjust the database filter. You can do that temporarily (until the next time syslogd restarts) with: That sets syslogd's filter to ASL_FILTER_MASK_UPTO(ASL_LEVEL_DEBUG). See the syslog(1) man page for details. You can also set the filter in syslogd's startup plist: /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ com.apple.syslogd.plist. Add to the ProgramArguments. See the syslogd(8) man page for details. If you change the plist, you'll need to reboot (or stop and re-start syslogd using launchctl) for the change to take effect. If the people looking at the radar need more info after that, they'll get in touch. Yes, I know... my question wasn't "how do I file a bug for this". It was "how do I collect the necessary information for this type of a hang so that by bug report, which I intend to file at bugreporter.apple.com is complete so that it has a better chance of being understood by the engineers that need to figure out the problem". I think I'll post there instead. Apple doesn't have time to test every USB/Firewire/whatever device, and I realize that... but I can't imagine they'd turn down a good bug report... though worst case scenario they might come back and say they're not going to fix it.
