It builds on the first try with darwinbuild on 10C540, and also the "xnu_debug" project. It boots in 3 seconds up to launchd (the first process) if the kernel is "pre-linked". Your problems could come from a "non clean" darwinbuild environment (plists, buildroot, etc..) and/or simply because you deploy your "extremely slow" kernel outside of its environment. I was running 10.6.2 in 64-bit mode, did a Time Machine backup, booted from the install DVD and restored it. I'm now consistently getting a kernel panic upon rebooting my 15" unibody MBP (mid-2009). I tried resetting NVRAM/PRAM as well as SMC. I tried booting in safe mode. Nothing helps, I get the apple on the screen and then the kernel panic. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? Having read the rest of this thread, I think Derek meant predictable in the sense that given the first value generated after seeding the generator with a value N, the values generated after seeding with N - 1 or N + 1 are "too predictable". His problem really boils down to the fact that rand() makes no guarantees on that front; indeed, nor do most other PRNGs. It's quite normal for even the highest quality PRNG to be seeded using a simpler PRNG when you call a function like srand(), so comparing the first generated value (or even the Nth generated value) is not likely to be a great plan. And, the answer is yes. The first number out of rand (as well as every subsequent number for that matter) is 100% predictable after re-seeding. By definition, the value that comes out of rand is directly related to the value passed into srand, because it is a PRNG. You will never get truly random numbers out of rand. The only way that you will even get close is to seed it with a single, hard-to-predict value (the time, a random number from a true RNG, etc.), *any* other use of rand will not guarantee you numbers that are anywhere near random. -- Clark S.
