There is one for the system architecture, and you can let it check against the constants listed at http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Carbon/Reference/Gesta… (make sure to use the numerical value, since the installer does not support symbolical constants and will treat them as strings). Well, that's the purpose of emulation, it emulates... One can also use $MACHTYPE in bash, which here is set to x86_64-apple-darwin10.0 whereas uname -m gives i386. This is because it's compiled into bash itself as a constant string AFAIK. But it's probably even more fragile, and bash-specific. What is the safe way of doing this? Our previous solution was to use system_profiler cpu_type. Interestingly, we have discovered that some systems do not provide a cpu_type string. I also looked at sysctl machdep.cpu. This entry is not even provided on PPC systems. Now I am considering sysctl kern.version although parsing that is likely the same as parsing arch. Is there a recommended solution? I haven't tracked this for a while now, but I imagine that, to serve you better, we have disabled some of the original "simple services" that were provided by most TCP/IP implementations. Anything like the ECHO, DISCARD, and TIME services can be used for DOS attacks. They are still defined, but I suspect few commercial systems ship with these enabled.
