The launchd plist will be ignored prior to 10.4. If you install a StartupItem that does nothing when /sbin/launchd is present, then you're set for a strategy that works on all versions of Mac OS X. Says that as of 10.4 launchd is the correct way of launching and managing daemons. It also says that as of 10.4 using startup items is deprecated. Does anyone know how to create a single daemon that can be launched/ managed on 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 and beyond systems? Is a separate daemon binary required for pre and post launchd versions of OS X?
