OpenDarwin's got a version that includes an -aehfs flag which nicely handles extended HFS metadata, and it seems to default to handling resource forks properly (no flags needed), as far as i can determine. It's easy to checkout via CVS. I also tweaked the Makefile to build a universal binary of it - if you're interested in trying it out, I'll mail you a copy. It looks like you're likely to stress test it more than i will.
