I want to assign a custom icon to a folder using, ideally, a bit of shell script/perl/python, though I'm not averse to building a little binary if that will do the trick. Looking at the the custom icon file that gets created when changing the icon in the 'get info' window, the data in the resource fork seems to be the same as a .icns file but with an extra 100 or so bytes of stuff on the front, which I can't grok.
