Sigh... This has been discussed ad nauseam and our story hasn't changed. If one wishes to run legacy programs unmodified, then one should use StartupItems.
I thought StartupItems were deprecated, and we weren't supposed to use them.
If you don't care about robustness, sure. But like I said earlier, we're going round and round in circles. Yes, Apple understands that the switch to launchd has caused a few IT professions grief as they find themselves caught in the middle of the legacy software clashing with modern OS design, but we hope that pain will be temporary.
I just worry that the attitude displayed towards existing practice will show up in future revisions. "We stopped supporting malloc, because the entire memory management model it implies is ludicrous and outmoded. You may need to make some small code changes to adapt." The vision of the future is an interesting one, and I'm not even entirely convinced that it's wrong; the transition management is enough to keep me from moving any services to a Mac until I've seen a couple of transitions that go more smoothly. -s _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
