What file system are we talking about? When you say "list", do you mean ls(1) ? Why is the same name listed twice? When we list dir trees, some file names as "José Lopes.txt" appear as "Jose?? L??opes.txt?. These are listed also as "Jose\314\201 ..." Some help ?
