So it will be different for each UNIX variant. Darwin has a heap(1) utility which clearly uses an API to get the information. You can see some of that by looking at the output of nm. However, I have been unable to find any published documentation about it. I am interested for example in extracting information about the blocks on the free list. Any help would be much appreciated.
