Helping out someone is great. You are a nice person. The picture is a by-product of having a .mac account. If Mail.app notices that the sender is using a .mac account, it checks the sender's profile (at mac.com), and if a picture has been uploaded, it displays that picture in the message. There are no secret tags. There are other ways of doing the same thing, involving Mail plugins, but I know nothing about them (including their names or sources).
