IOKit does not provide any notifications of system shutdown. The IORegisterForSystemPower() API call that you make below only refers to system sleep & wake power events, not shutdown events - the argument messageType may be kIOPMMessageCanSystemSleep, kIOPMMessageSystemWillSleep, kIOPMMessageSystemWillNotSleep, kIOPMMessageSystemHasPoweredOn, kIOPMMessageSystemWillPowerOn.
