I have noticed applications on MacOS X, such as iTunes, manage to keep the reference to a file even when it is moved elsewhere on disk. At the moment I have an application that has a playlist, but if the user moves the file I lose the reference to the file. The way I am doing it is simply keeping reference to the file path.
