I can't find the old echo service any more, yet if you list /etc/ services there is is happily sitting on TCP/UDP port 6. So what is the magic juju that enables it? I haven't tracked this for a while now, but I imagine that, to serve you better, we have disabled some of the original "simple services" that were provided by most TCP/IP implementations. Anything like the ECHO, DISCARD, and TIME services can be used for DOS attacks. They are still defined, but I suspect few commercial systems ship with these enabled. You are, of course, allowed to implement servers for the missing services :-} This email sent to site_archiver@lists.apple.com
