It would be nice if libreadline was LGPL'd, just as a large number of other GNU project libraries are, but it is not. Until then, we'll do our best to provide an unencumbered compatibility story with libedit, which is BSD licensed and, as Bill notes, not an Apple invention in any way (the *BSD projects have exactly the same concerns). But do they install a symlink libreadline.dylib->libedit.dylib? This is the real problem we were discussing here.
