Shouldn't xnu specify gcc 3.3 in it's Makefile, then? It seems rather overbearing of xnu to require the developer to switch their default compiler (might be building other stuff too...) You need to use gcc 3.3 to build the kernel and associated projects. gcc 4.0 is the default compiler shipped in Tiger, so you'll have to switch using "gcc_select 3.3".
