Thanks for your help. I am not sure that this list is the best forum for this question, but I'll try to help. The short answer is that there are many applications available, all of which must be compiled specifically for the Macintosh architecture. If you are interested in a commercial application you should contact your vendor and ask for a Mac OS X version. (I switched my Mathematica license from Unix to Mac OSX.) Many open-source applications common to Unix are available for Mac OSX. Generally you need to compile these from a source distribution in order to install them, although people make binary releases available from time to time. Most people use a package manager to build, install, and maintain open-source applications. Fink, DarwinPorts, and Gentoo are package managers that maintain collections of open-source applications known to compile and work on Mac OS X. The mainline distribution of GNU Emacs supports a native Mac OS X target; it will build an Emacs.app that works just like other Mac applications. Xemacs is also available, but you may have to run X11 in order to use it. I would recommend you look at http://fink.sourceforge.net or try a web search engine.
