I now plan to work on a PPC version in order to see if it works as a free OS. It's not; have a look at http://yarrwin.sf.net/blog (and note that I all but gave up when I got that far). I determined exactly what I required, and sent email to the opensource@apple.com address (which I've always found I get a quick and informative answer from; thanks Kevin) but unfortunately was told that the appropriate driver cannot currently be released as open source. An earlier version is available from 10.2.x so you could try forward-porting that, but I expect you'd be stranded on 10.2-capable hardware. If I had any experience with IOkit I might have tried myself. This email sent to site_archiver@lists.apple.com
