HFS uses extent-based allocation; that is, rather than enumerating every block that makes up an allocation, allocations are recorded as a starting block and a run length. If you mean this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extents, I think it is somewhat misleading. As Michael said, HFS extents are simply a matter of accounting for used space.
