Font rendering isn't kernel functionality and as such has little to do with kexts or with the underlying Darwin system. Mac OS X has always (at least in every version I've used) been able to render "Windows TrueType" fonts as well as AAT fonts, OpenType fonts and PostScript fonts. If you're having font rendering problems the place to post is probably quartz-dev.
