Re: GNU-Darwin: missing code in Darwin
site_archiver@lists.apple.com Delivered-To: darwin-dev@lists.apple.com My method is to delete all proprietary drivers, then add them back carefully until I get a minimal set. I report that to Apple, and to others as required. For Darwin-7 that set was as follows. AppleAPIC.kext/ AppleI386GenericPlatform.kext/ These drivers were modified and released in Darwin-8, but another driver appeared, which is required for the system to boot. AppleACPIPlatform That appears to me as a ruse in order to bury the dog deeper so that FOSS developers will continuing with the platform. At least we are now fortunately left with a single proprietary driver to deal with. GNU-Darwin will not distribute proprietary drivers, so we are stranded at 1.0 at this time so far as the OS is concerned. I now plan to work on a PPC version in order to see if it works as a free OS. With respect to GNU-Darwin; when we are not OS hacking, we are building and packaging free software for users. It is unfortunate to me that we must use the above drivers in order to do that, but it is necessary in order to reach Apple users with the values of software freedom now.
