As for cvs I can say: Been there, done that (Bug ID 3720902, Status "closed"). Apple does not consider shipping cvs 1.10 a problem, so I will gladly hop on the bandwaggon here. pull src/cvs from OpenDarwin's repository. build it, install it, be happy. Another route is to use DarwinPorts, which even places it in a place that won't be override by an update. I know, it does not cure the cause of the problem, but it helps at least a bit.
