If you create a backup file, that backup file will have its own creation date. Well, that's wrong then. A Backup /must be/ identical to the source in every possible respect otherwise it can not be used to properly restore said file to it's original state. To preserve creation date, one would use a filesystem dump(8)/restore (8) utility. I see that Mac OS X has dump/restore from FreeBSD. I have not yet used this facility for HFS+ volumes.
