Getting CFBundle properties within driver

I am writing an audio driver and would like to perform a very small amount of work at least every millisecond, with no more variance than a tenth of a millsecond. What mechanisms can be employed here? Can a thread be used? Can the priority be raised high enough to ensure it is running once every millsecond? Is there a timer as accurate as a Time Manager Task in OS 9? The kernel source is not a 'live' repository. Rather, it gets updated from inside Apple on a (more or less) regular basis. The tricky part for those on the outside is to determine what versions (based on CVS tag) are worth building and trying out on a given installed system. Your best bet to get a kernel that works with, say, 10.1.3, is to check out tag Apple-201-19. It's possible that something like Apple-222 will work, although I haven't tried it. In general, if you don't know that a specific tag will work with your installed system, you are on thin ice if you try it. That's not a reason to avoid it, but forewarned is I forget just what... Regarding your question about what work remains, Jim's message points you in the right direction (check the bug list available at the darwin website: http://publicsource.apple.com/projects/bugs.html) Thinking that there's no more work to do in the kernel is like thinking we have solved the outstanding problems in particle physics. Where next?

Where is there work left to be done in the kernel? I've looked through the CVS tree, though only through CVSWeb, and noticed that most modification dates on xnu that are all older than 5 weeks or so. Is there nothing left to do on the kernel (Not likely) or is there simply nobody working on it? The only thing that I've noticed change recently in cvs is libm. Yea! New math lib. I know this isn't exactly about the kernel but anything worth knowing about the new math lib? Any major bugs or such? Basically I just want to know how I can help out. resend: serial console?

I'm trying to run a serial console on a Dual G4 800 running OS X 10.1 Can anybody help? Openfirmware will use a serial console, however I don't know how to make Darwin use one. I've tried pulling the keyboard, and the video card. Pulling the video card just causes Darwin not to boot.. Is it even possible to get Darwin to use a serial console? I see what looks like code for console selection, but I have no idea how it gets called. I'm guessing that a serial console driver needs to call IOPlatformExpert::setConsoleInfo(), but I have no idea what that serial console driver might be called. I can't even get a getty going on the serial port. Are you in kernel or out of kernel? Are you likely to compete with a HAL audio thread, i.e. are you or your client using 'sound manager'? In kernel the timer is very good 1ms isn't really a big problem. However if you are competing with a 'real time' thread and IT uses more than 100us every millisecond, i.e. 10% CPU load then you wont have a clean solution. The APIs are accessible through <kern/thread_call.h> and <IOKit/IOTimerEventSource.h>. In anycase Darwin has a ~200us interrupt latency worst case so we can make no guarantee better than 200us even at primary interrupt. So the real problem is going to be with what other tasks and threads are you competing? The standard trap most ports of MacOS Classic caode has experienced is that X and Classic have different threading models and a shallow port usually ends in tears. Look at the xnu source for examples of its use (see xnu/bsd/net/bpf.c). Typically, your KEXT would not have anything to do with this particular variable, unless you were writing a network device driver of some sort, and then all you would do is assign to it.
