If the target of the -LoginHook parameter is a plain Mach-O binary that acts like a daemon, the mechanism works. String handling still broken in dev_finddir(), bsd/miscfs/devfs/devfs_tree.c

Dear Apple developers, A long time ago I found a serious brokenness in Darwin's devfs implementation. I posted it to several newsboards, mailing lists and bugtracker tools as I was told to do. Now, almost four month later, my bug still has a "Open/Verify" state (stored as #3200736) and the simple one line patch I contributed did still not make it to the kernel repository. I actually thought Apple does a step in the right direction by taking advantage of the open source software model, but seeing the core developers completely ignoring submissions from the outside world makes me believe that i was mistaken. What a bummer. It's not that I necessarily want to have my own line in the Darwin kernel, it's simply not possible for me to continue developing the driver I'm working on when nobody out there is able to use it without patching the kernel. Could someone *please* tell where the problem is? I have added the path to an executable and the path to a script using the -LoginHook parameter to loginwindow and neither getsexecuted. Kernel wired memory will grow at first, as system-wide resource limits are reached on vnodes, etc.. But it should level out at about 10-25% of available memory at default configurations (higher for smaller memory systems). But some other resources don't have global limits, and a process (or set of processes) may be asking the kernel to allocate more and more of these resources. You can get a better handle on what kernel resource type is growing in such an unbounded way by using the "zprint" tool to dump statistics about the kernel's zone-allocated resource pools (and comparing the output over time). Once you know which resource pool is growing (seemingly unbounded), you would get a lot better help. You may also want to look at the top output for the other processes. Are there ever increasing numbers of memory regions, threads, or Mach ports in any of them? [Disclaimer: I'm no kernel hacker. I was an applications program for a dozen years or so, but that was on the "old" MacOS and such. I have a little knowledge of *nix systems, and no knowledge of kernels. It's possible that this question is not even a kernel problem, but it seems to be something that happening to the kernel task. I've posted this question a few different ways on the OSX server list, and really nobody had a good answer. Maybe someone here can give me a clue?} On my OS X v10.2.6 server, I run a "top" command every 30 minutes and log it to a file. I started doing this to debug a persistent crashing problem that always occurs with a memory allocation panic. By logging "top" output in this way, I've noticed that process 0, the kernel task, uses about .3MB more physical memory every time, i.e., every 30 minutes. Does anyone have any idea WHY this would be happening? Eventually it sucks up so much memory the machine crashes. I called Apple and the support tech said "reformat your disk and reinstall the OS". He said three general types of things could cause the problem: bad memory, network problems (how?) and a "corrupted" kernel (how and why?) I have run the HW diagnostic from Apple and from TechTools, and the memory chips show no problem. Is there any such thing as a virus that would do this on Darwin/OSX? I'm reluctant to format and reinstall because frankly, it's a pain in the neck. Interestingly, the virtual size of the process (VSIZE) does not necessarily grow as this problem occurs. I've been told that's too little ram, so I'm adding another 512MB, which I suppose is a "good thing". But really, the thing should not be crashing and unless I can find out why this task keeps growing, I assume that my additional ram will just mean that, instead of crashing about every 3 days, it crashes about every 9 days! Hi David, Experimentally I found that multiple -loginHook's are not feasible. Only the first one executes. This is true from 10.0.x through 10.2.x. I wound up with a StartupItem that launches a daemon that executes my loginHook app when a user logs in. What Apple really should've done was to either define a way to chain -loginHook's or to just make loginWindow able to handle multiple -loginHook parameters. For lack of a better known place to ask this question: For the console command in /etc/ttys can there be multiple -loginHook parameters OR can there be multiple entries fro one -loginHook parameter? i.e. -loginHook /usr/bin/scptA -loginHook /usr/bin/scptB OR -loginHook /usr/bin/scptA /usr/bin/scptB My KEXT installer needs to make an entry for -loginHook and if there is one there already I need to modify it in some manner to add my login requirement.
