OF boot experts please!

Hello, Ok so booting from OF must be one of the most common questions. I've seen lots suggestions by searching the archives but I haven't seen anyone with answers for my particular problem---I'm rooted on UFS! My OF variables: boot-device = mac-io/ata-4@1f000/@0,10,\\:tbxi boot-file = My Partitions: 9: Mac OS 9.2 on Apple_HFS 10: BootX on Apple_Boot 11: / on Apple_UFS I've tried variously setting boot-file to: hd:10,\mach_kernel.new hd:10,mach_kernel.new hd:11,\mach_kernel.new hd:11,mach_kernel.new (In this case hd is mac-io/ata-4@1f000/@0 All to no avail. I suspect that there is some trick when you're rooted on UFS. Does anyone know the secret? Although there is no netname server at all, the bootstrap server subsumes these responsibilities I've read, not even the bootstrap server is available to the Kernel task(s). So the questions here are: is the BSD kernel a single Mach task? Are there any other Mach tasks (doing Mach IPC) within the kernel boundry? The Darwin kernel is a monolithic kernel. There really is no "BSD Kernel". Instead, there is a kernel that uses Mach for messaging, memory management, and process/task/thread management ('process' is really specific to BSD, while 'task' is specific to Mach); IOKit for device support; and BSD for the rest of the OS services, including the process-management stuff that Mach does not handle. It's all one big happy family down there. Mach IPC is primarily used for user/kernel and user/user communication. Perhaps some is used 'intra-Mach', but I'm not sure. 2. I've also read in the list that the way to do kernel/userland boundry crossings with Mach is to somehow pass the required port rights from userland into the kernel. How is this usually done? Are there realtivly simple examples of services (Mach servers if that's possible) living in kernel land that are in the kernel that someone can point me to? If you want to interact specifically with Mach, you do have to use Mach calls. These are compiled in when the kernel and user libraries are built. I don't know that Mach in Darwin can really support 'Mach servers' at this point; someone with a bit more understanding that I have will have to clarify that. Interacting with the BSD-based services (file system, networking, standard Unix system calls) is done as usual. Look for sysent.c in the xnu/bsd tree. As for examples, the source is available. Look for the 'xnu' project on the Darwin web site <http://developer.apple.com/darwin>. The top-level directories in that project deal with the three major components (Mach, BSD, IOKit), together with some support pieces. The dynamic pager is one piece that uses Mach messaging. Also, direct communication with IOKit device drivers is done with something called the UserClient interface, which, I think, is Mach-based. 3. Older Mach documentation pretty explicitly states that MachIPC is a wire protocol in addition to an in kernel IPC mechanism. Are the hooks still in Darwin/Mac OS X to do IPC between distributed processes? Not that I'm aware of. There may be vestigial code in there, but it's atrophied... Regards, Justin -- Justin C. I'll wait until opendarwin 7.2.0 is ready to roll and investigate from there. I'd like to be able to rebuild the entire system, do FAT builds, debug builds, etc. I think the reason darwin-x86 appears so slow on my system is the fact it's booting from UFS. Another poster emailed me privately saying he saw an 8x speedup when booting from HFS+. Switching disks when accessing a filesystem

What I want to do is, when the user double-clicks on a file in FileSystemA/VolumeA that I'm writing is: -copy the selected file to a folder pre-selected by the end-user on VolumeB -have the OS directly access the file on VolumeB as if there was no VolumeA >From looking at the WebDAV source in Darwin, it appears that it kind of does this, except it 'happens' at the wrong spot. It downloads the file into /tmp, but applications don't directly access it. They still go through the WebDAV filesystem, which accesses the file in /tmp. I need to instead have applications directly access the file [so if they double-click on a file twice, two copies of the file would be in the local folder for example]. I was thinking of trying to track down the vnode of the file on VolumeB [after I copy the file from VolumeA to VolumeB] and returning that vnode instead of one from VolumeA. Does this sound like a reasonable thing to do, or would the OS get confused about this sort of thing? what's the replacement of page

struct page is used very frenqently in linux, i.e, sendpage, readpage, but I cannot find a replacement struct in darwin-kernel, could you guys give me some advice about it?
