Correct you do not need Xcode but... we have several projects that are shared between Linux, Windows and Mac OS X and we decided that for many of the stable projects we would actually use Xcode projects to build them for the simple fact that we can use distributed build system built into Xcode (easier to get going). It's quite difficult to generate "2-3 minutes" worth of dirty file data without having any of it pushed out, and the message claiming that dirty data is pushed synchronously every 30 seconds is completely incorrect. It *is* possible to find yourself blocked waiting for data to be flushed if you attempt to flush twice in a row; the second flush request wants the same lock that is held by the flush operation that was kicked off by the first request. This is by design, making it possible to synchronously wait for an asynchronous flush, however this operation is only per-file, not system-wide. On the Mac I have no problem whatsoever using Xcode for managing projects. Quite often I still use vim for editing the source files. (Also something like: osascript -e 'tell application "Xcode" to add file "file" to project "proj"' would probably work too if you dislike the mouse that much.) So there is absolutely no way to skip using Xcode??? I cannot believe that!! Like I said in my first post, I'm sure you can write a Makefile to do what Xcode does to build a kext. But it is not trivial, e.g. you have to generate an info structure and link it in under a certain symbol. Can I do it with Vim? If it is possible, how to make the Makefile for the kext code? Switching from vim editor to anything else is too difficult for me. Besides, cscope/ctags give me the best way to analyse the code. Just because Xcode has an editor built in doesn't mean you have to use it. You can use any editor to modify the files. Of course that is possible, but then things become less fun, even ugly. Seriously I think you need to get things into perspective. Adding files is a relatively rare operation. Whereas with vim, I just need to open the Makefile, and modify it. Very simple and quick shot. But how long did you spend writing the Makefile to build the project in the correct way? For those are familar with programming from console/terminal, GUI is not effiecient at all.
