Tried everything obvious, nothing seemed to work. It won't run from a CD (DVD), but I can hold down the Option-key and see the startup volume. Also, I was able to get it into Target mode (T) and using firewire, save most of my files. Then I reinstalled (upgrade mode) the system over the firewire connection. It came up finally, but just a few times. Now it's back to Panic mode again. Does anyone know what I might do to locate the problem? It reports "Unresolved kernel trap (cpu0) 0x700 - Prog DAR=0x00..003696E000 and PC=0x00..00D59C8. This is a partial panic message indicating an attempted access of an unmapped page at supervisor mode. This type of failure can be anywhere, and since data layout will vary based on what you have installed on the machine, a partial panic message like this is useless for problem diagnosis, since there isn't even version information to indicate whether the PC is in the kernel or in a KEXT. Most likely the full panic message will implicate a third party KEXT; if so, holding down the shift key while booting will likely make the problem go away, unless the KEXT author had messed up their plist and claimed their KEXT is needed to mount the root device.
