Thanks for the detailed explanation. Below you say "Apple has added the ability to boot from an MBR into the firmware in order to support booting Windows". Does this mean I could use the Windows install CD and totally reformat the drive to use the legacy MBR and (of course) be able to boot to Windows without bootcamp? It's my understanding the answer is no; there are other components involved that would be lost if you were to do that. Again, you should find a more appropriate mailing list for your questions.
