I am trying my best to understand the context of your question. I am feeling that it may be related to the fact that people claim OS X has a Mach microkernel at it's core. This is not 100% correct. XNU, the Darwin kernel, is really a hybrid BSD and Mach kernel. Generally speaking it handles all of the normal kernel functions of a BSD operating system while using Mach to handle some parts like memory management and some IPC calls [interprocess communication]. Is this the sort of information you are looking for?
