In case you want to feel better, your test program runs without incident (and without modification) just fine on Solaris 10 for x86, so there's nothing inherent to your test that should be causing a problem.
Yes I tested on linux while developing it, and only ran it on the mac to verify I was indeed still crashing the kernel.
