The easiest way is to check using the getrlimit() system call along with RLIMIT_NPROC, or via the "ulimit -u" built-in in bash or csh. "ulimit -u" in bash, sh, or zsh and "limit | grep proc" in csh, tcsh, and zsh too should easily show up the success of the kernel build.
