Thanks to everyone who has been responding - I've got some off-list responses as well. Much Googling has turned up that Command-F1 enables mirroring on PowerBooks and MacBooks, and that Command-F2 will detect newly-plugged in monitors. I'll give it a try when I get off work, in about an hour. Also suggested are to install Vine Server, a VNC server, over the network, to launch the System Preferences via SSH and then blindly drag it to the external monitor, or to edit the window server property list file. I'll report back on whatever works for me. Thanks!
