What if you try "add-kext" instead of "add-symbol-file"? Specify the path to the kext, i.e. (gdb) add-kext ~/fsd/omfs.kext

sudo kextutil -arch x86_64 -s ~/fsd/symdir ~/fsd/omfs.kext

...but before you do that, build the symbols into the same directory as your kext, e.g. sudo kextutil -n -arch x86_64 -s ~/fsd/ ~/fsd/omfs.kext -n don't load the kext, just generate symbols There were changes in both SnowLeopard and Lion to help search for kexts and their symbols (see a previous post by Jason Molenda in this mailing list) which perhaps means that putting your symbols in a different directory than the kext itself is confusing someone.
