Darwin-kernel mailing list (Darwin-kernel@lists.apple.com) Help/Unsubscribe/Update your Subscription: http://lists.apple.com/mailman/options/darwin-kernel/site_archiver%40lists.a... I have a 2005 iMac with a G5 and a 20" screen - nothing else fancy. About 2 weeks ago, I started getting Kernel Panics while starting up. Tried everything obvious, nothing seemed to work. It won't run from a CD (DVD), but I can hold down the Option-key and see the startup volume. Also, I was able to get it into Target mode (T) and using firewire, save most of my files. Do you have the diagnostic CD or DVD that came with the machine? With recent Macs, disk #1 has the OpenFirmware/EFI-based hardware tests available by holding down the D key at boot. The disk has text describing this on its label if so. If you have that it _might_ be useful to run the most strenuous motherboard and RAM tests. I say _might_ because testing a CPU and memory rigorously using that same CPU and memory is a somewhat dubious proposition. But for gross problems (like what it sounds like you might have) it can help. Also, keep tabs on other possible factors like ambient temperature or the panics take X time after Y time shutdown. Sometimes these things can shed light. This email sent to site_archiver@lists.apple.com
