No need to reboot the machnie at all. That is not my experience though. I have a USB pen drive that I tend to plug into my Apple keyboard that hangs off the back of my powerbook. On more than one occasion I have just disconnect the keyboard (and hence the USB pen drive) whist the powerbook is asleep. When the PB wakes up it complains about the lack of USB Drive - fair enough. But on re-inserting the USB drive one two occasions it could not be read by the mac at all - in the end I needed to plug it into a PC to reformat it... It would be nice if as part of a sleep all files were synced and the drives were left in a tidy state...
