I think that if you mess with the ipfw rules, the built-in personal firewall will assume there is another firewall running and disable itself. This may also interfere with internet sharing. Well, actually it's more a complete mess from a UI point of view than anything. Let's say the Firewall is running (both from an ipfw point of view and the Firewall sharing pref pane): * the UI is disabled ("other Firewall software is running..."), the Start button is set to 'Start' but the text description on the right is "Click Stop to allow incoming network communication..." * BUT the Firewall is not disabled since the ipfw rules (the "built-in" ones and yours) are up and running (net.inet.ip.fw.enable: 1 for instance) This may have changed a bit in 10.4 (I'm looking at this on 10.3.9) so maybe the text description is less incorrect.
